The EUROMOD Research Workshop took place on 6 October, with six presentations focused on the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Michael Christl and Silvia De Poli (Joint Research Centre, European Commission, Spain) presented an evaluation of the cushioning effect of fiscal policy in the EU during the COVID-19 crisis. Tapio Räsänen (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland – Kela, Finland) presented his work on the effect of the pandemic on gender equality in Finland. Karina Doorley (Economic and Social Research Institute, Ireland) discussed the impact of COVID-19 on gender gap in Ireland. Andreas Peichl (ifo Institute, Germany) gave a presentation on the mitigating role of short-term work schemes and discretionary policy measures during the pandemic in Germany. Tine Hufkens (Federal Public Service Social Security, Belgium) presented an analysis of the degree of social protection offered by the tax-benefit system to atypical workers in Belgium, using BELMOD, a version of EUROMOD running on administrative data. Francesco Figari (University of Insubria, Italy) gave the last presentation of the workshop, with a talk on how to evaluate tax-benefit policies at local level using spatial microsimulation techniques with EUROMOD.
