The note demonstrates that the Shapley value decomposition of the Gini index of total income by income sources obtains results that counteract usual expectations regarding the role of means-tested benefits, personal income taxes and social insurance contributions. The empirical case is based on income, tax and benefit data obtained by EUROMOD for fifteen EU countries in 2017.
