EUROMOD Research Workshop - 2020

The EUROMOD workshop saw the participation of colleagues from the JRC, ESTAT and University of Essex (UoE), representative from the partner DGs (EMPL, ECFIN, TAXUD, REFORM), members of the EUROMOD National Teams and invited experts from the broader research community.

Given the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the events took place online - through Webex.

Several presentations focused on the socio-economic consequences of COIVD-19 and on the policy responses to the pandemic:

• Francesco Figari (University of Insubria, Italy) presented a cross-country assessment of the resilience of the welfare state to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the comparison between Italy and the UK. 
• Karina Doorley (ESRI, Ireland) presented an assessment of the budgetary and distributional consequences of the policy response to COVID-19 in Ireland.
• Matteo Richiardi and Iva Tasseva (ISER, UK) presented two UK based analyses. In particular, Matteo focused on nowcasting the macro-economic consequences of the recession and on forecasting the recovery path; Iva presented an analysis of the UK policy response to Covid-19 and its impact on household incomes.
• Reena Badian-Mangusson (World Bank) presented a comprehensive assessment of the consequences of the pandemic in Europe.
• Luke Martinelli (University of Bath) analysed the perspectives of universal basic income in times of COVID-19.
• Michael Christl (JRC) presented an assessment of the distributional consequences of COVID-19 in Europe with a special focus on the shock absorption properties of automatic stabilisers and discretionary policies.

These presentations showcased the need for EUROMOD to follow closely the economic and policy developments in order to further contribute to the debate, especially when considering the social consequences of this crisis.
